Fort Hood is a United States military post, situated close to Killeen, Texas, and halfway between Austin and Waco. It boasts the largest area of any military base in the world – measuring in at an impressive 215,000 acres. Dating back to 1942, the campus was used as a training and testing center for guns to be employed against German tanks. Since WWII, Ft. Hood Military Base housed cavalry and artillery divisions involved in the Vietnam War, Operation Iraqi Freedom and other military conflicts. Approximately 65,000 soldiers and their families currently live on Ft. Hood.
Military buffs will be intrigued by a visit to the 1st Cavalry Division Museum and the 3rd Armored Cavalry Museum. Both of these historic exhibitions feature equipment, such as vintage tanks and helicopters, that you can approach up-close. If you choose to make this into a family outing, kids will be delighted by the living history presentations at the 1st Cavalry Division Museum.
As a prominent part of the nearby Texas communities, Fort Hood residents often take advantage of nearby attractions. The Stonetree Golf Course is a favorite destination for golfers, where gentle slopes offer lovely scenery for a day off the base. Another great golfing site is Hills of Cove Golf Course, located near our eye care clinic in Copperas Cove. On your way from Ft. Hood Military Base to tee off, stop by to pick up tinted lenses that will enhance visual contrast and improve your game on the golf course.
